OMC 5.0 developed a ticking noise

I have a 5.0 that is relatively new (about 50 hours) and recently developed a ticking noise. The boat is a Marada 93 with a 5.0 OMC. The engine backfired 3 years ago and blew a cylinder so I replaced the engine. I only use the boat about 5 times a year. Mainly for water skiing.

At the end of last season the engine started ticking. It kind of sounds like a valve that is not seated correctly but came on all of a sudden. My mechanic came by and listen to the sound and said that he would take a look at it when he winterized the boat at the end of the season. He said that it did not sound like a major problem. He ended up not having the time to diagnose the problem at the end of the season. Now he is loaded with boats and does not have time to fix it any time soon. (Tupper Lake, NY)

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. At this point the boat has not been put in the water yet this year. I may only use the boat a few times this year but I need it in 2 weeks for a family reunion. I realize this problem could be anything from exhaust to a value issue. One thing to note is that the oil pressure gauge reads in the normal range and is functioning properly.

Thanks in advance for any possible solutions.

I'd recommend doing a compression test. That might point out a valve issue, or other concerns with 1 cylinder.... it will also give you a chance to look for a cracked spark plug and that sort of thing....you'll just be spending some quality time in the engine bay with the switch in your hand so you can watch and listen to things happening. You might get a better idea of the area the tick is coming from.

Thanks. I have never done a compression test before but I am guessing that it's pretty easy. I will report back.
