I have a 1995 Four Winns with a 5.0 and w few years back the out drive was stolen and I contacted a guy in Florida and bought a refurbed Volvo Penta outdrive but ever since it just hasn't had any power. The boat has been in repair for a couple maybe 3 years having the transom and all the stringers and all replaced. Yes it took a while since I have a full time job and remodeling a house also. Does anybody have an idea of how I can feel if the gear ratio is correct or not? I haven't been able to find the invoice of were I bought the outdrive.

with the drive in gear, turn the input shaft and count the turns of the prop shaft.

I can fairly easy turn the shaft and I never get any more resistance than it started. I turned the prop 5 complete turns.Should I be able to do this? Should it spin at all?

ok more checks. I put the gear in reverse and the prop will not move. On the water the boat will go but its as if the clutch is slipping and eventually gets working. I disconnected the shifter cable and manually shifted in reverse and forward and the same results. Locked in reverse and and moves easily in forward.

OK it will not turn in the forward gear. So how can I determine the gearing ratio in the outdrive?
