I think I have two problems but they may be related....
Firstly, after placing the boat in the water the gear shift from forward-reverse and back again was sweet. After cruising for 5 miles the drive stubbonly refuse to drop into neutral and when it did slam into reverse (with much heaving on the lever) would refuse to go back into forward.
Secondly, after about 10miles the boat started to cough and splutter when hitting 2500 rpm so trolled the last 5 miles. Again the gear shifting issue raised it's head. Luckily avoided low speed colision with pier. Family disembarked, loyal friend jumped on board. Checked wiring for anything that might have come drift but visual inspection fine. Boat restarted and gear shift working perfectly.
As we return home the number of revs we could hold and the duration slowly decreased until after 20 restarts the boat failed to start at all. However each time it was restarted it would hit 4300 rpm in neutral. Boat fuel tank brimmed before departure and approx 15 miles covered. Fuel gauge reading at failure was half to three quarters full. RNLI hailed on the radio and towed home.
Due to low tide boat left on mooring for 90 mins before returned to trailer. Strangely the engine started and flushed through with clean water.
Speaking to a few friends the most likely cause is fuel pump failure. It's a recently restored four winns liberator and the restorer said the pump had not been changed although fuel tank cleaned, inspected, new fuel sender fitted and tested good.
Any suggestion on best type of replacement pump to fit? And regarding the gear shift and ideas at all. When first started its fine but after a few miles bad. It was suggested i checked the cable set-up but this would either be right all the time, or wrong surely. Any suggestions welcome as it's behaviour is baffling.
Just to give some background. I have recentyl fitted a replacement electronic ignition system, new leads etc but also installed a replacement esa module as suggested by the supplier. It's a well made unit so I doubt its the cause and again i doubt it would be intermittent if it was faulty. Suggestion /comments / confirmation with diagnostics welcome. Thanks.
