so I have a 93 caravelle with the 5.8 cobra carbureted . It always starts right up, idles fine, takes off fine and runs like it should. But after I find a spot and put it in neutral it will spit and sputter for a few second and then start running fine again. Doesn’t usually die but will every now and then. Just wondering what this could be, haven’t found anybody ask this question before. Thanks in advance
Howdy,
Welcome aboard!
I'll second Lou's determination. (if you have a "Dog-clutch drive + ESA)
Also, post the model number so we know exactly what you have!
Yours could be either a 93 or a 92 engine and drive.
584APLAMH 1992
584APLAMK 1992
584APRAMH 1992
584APRAMK 1992
584DPEAMH 1992
584DPEAMK 1992
584APLJVB 1993
584APRJVB 1993
584DPEJVB 1993
584DPPJVB 1993
It appears that all the 92 models were Dog-clutch Cobras (with standard shift actuator and ESA)
2 of the 1993 (carbureted) models were "interim" drives using the dreaded OMC Spitfire ignition (NO ESA)
Shift interrupt in the electronic ignition models is handled in the electronic ignition "Module" and a shift interrupt switch that operates a little differently from standard Shift Actuator+ separate ESA (Shift Module)
(Unfortunately, some of the parts for the Spitfire ignition system are no longer available)
This is why it's sort of imperative to post your actual model number. It's hard to accurately diagnose what your problem is without knowing exactly what you have.
Now having said all of the above, a "sticky" lower shift cable, shift actuator linkage, or faulty interrupt microswitch could cause either system to actuate when you don't want it to.......But it will still help to know what you have......and understand, your engine and drive could have been switched with something totally different by a prior owner in last 25 years...(unless you bought it new!)
Once you determine what your actual model number is, you can view illustrations and part diagrams etc at
