Is there any way one can check the outdrive to ensure it will shift into forward and reverse without it being on the boat and running? The manual suggests one should not shift the drive without the engine running. So, how would you tell if a used drive was good to buy? Would you have to install the whole drive onto the boat and start it up in order to tell?

Re: OMC 800 drive?

depends which type - hydro or mechanical.

regardless, shifting into gear properly isn't a test of the clutch dogs or the even the water pump splines - ability to transmit 200+HP to the prop is not going to be measured on the bench.
you either disassemble everything, and evaluate the parts
or you drain fluids and go by that -but if the oil is new it will tell you nothing

you can roll shafts and make sure the propshaft isn't bent etc.
turn the ball gear clockwise facing it - see what it feels like
