Hey all ,

I have a quick question on the ESA for a 800 stringer .

I have been reading up on various threads about the operation of the ESA , I know its supposed to stumble the engine down when its activated to about 450ish RPM .

On mine when I depress the switch It certainly stumbles the engine , to the point it kills the engine if I hold the switch.

f I just "tap" the switch momentarily the engine stumbles and goes back to normal (doesnt die)

so my question is - if you guys hold the switch down for a couple of seconds will it kill your engine ? Or do I have a bad ESA ? There is no way my engine will stay running if I hold it for longer than say 1 second. (idle about 650 and in good tune, new points , timing is right, etc)

Or is mine working correct and the shift happens fast enough that the end result is just just a "tap" of the switch ?

thanks much

it will kill your motor if you hold it down. it literally is a path to ground for the coil negative terminal. when the switch is closed, the coil field quits collapsing and the spark output is turned off.

the point of that little micro switch is to momentarily kill the ignition as you are shifting (swiftly). the action of shifting only needs that micro-second of stumble to unload the dog clutch.
