85 OMC 800.. 250 hp v8

Last year I changed my hydro assus Lowe to a mechanical shift lower

Ran it on muffs a couple times all seems OK.. But it was getting cold fast so I winterized it..

So it's nice again time to take it out... Put the hoses back on (engine hoses I pulled to help drain). Put the muffs on. Started it up... Ran it for a couple mins... But my temp guage never budged..(no water to the engine so temp won't read on air) ... Oh crap. First problem I didn't close the drains on my exhaust... Dang it.. Did I just burn up my impeller?

Close all the drains try again ... Now I got water and the temp Guage starts working... But now it's seems to run hot. I shut it off at 220 on the Guage. Although it didn't seem that hot

So I go get a new thermostat put it in. The old one was pretty nssty.. And dig out my temp gun....

Now the Guage says 200.BUT TEMP GUN READS 160 MAX EVEN RIGHT ON THE EXHAUST... 140.TOP OF THE THERMOSTS HOUSING 160 MAX AT THE BOTTOM.

So I'm assuming the gauge is not accurate BUT IS WORKING ... Not a huge deal right now. (I will change it out)

My question is. Did I maybe damage the impeller? (I changed the imp and housing when I did the Lower)

Now yes it's running COOL ON THE MUFFS But my thoughts are.... Muffs are under pressure from my hose... So waters getting in. But is that only because of the water pressure? In other words. If I did burn up the impeller is it running OK on muffs because that's pressurized allready.... But once I take it out to the lake it won't be... So it may not cool...

How would I know for sure if I burnt it up? Other than putting it on the lake and running it?

Hope that makes sense. Thanks

The best way would be to open it back up. But, if you want to try it out on the lake you can. That's really the only two ways. The Stringer doesn't really "suck" water up using the impeller - it need to be submerged. So, putting it in the lake or visually inspecting it are the ways you'll get an answer.

With the gauge not working right, it'll be harder to see if you're overheating on the water - so, there's some risk there.

Thank you South.... I don't really want to tear it down again unless I need to...

It's pretty easy to drop it In the lake. So as soon as a new Guage show up I'll drop it in the water. Good to know it does not "suck" water
