I am running a rebuilt Chevy 350 all Edelbrock carb and intake and cam. Not the original engine. The out drive is a OMC 800 cable shift 1978 original with the boat. Forward gear works great, reverse on the other hand is slipping. When the engine is off I can drop it into reverse and roll the engine over with the prop. But when running it slips, pops in and out of gear only at a idle. When I give it throttle it wont grab at all. Also it is stiff when shifting in reverse but not in forward gear. I have checked all of the linkage, and adjusted the shift arm on the back of the engine so that it is mostly on the reverse side of the dial. I also have the engine idle around 550-600 rpm. I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or might have some insight. Thanks

Re: omc 800 reverse slip even with proper idle!

I'm going to take a guess from experience with my 800 stringer. When I put mine in reverse with anything much more than an idle it lifts away from the intermediate unit and I hear that dreaded ball gear sound. If the outdrive does this, You might bust off the ball gears.
If this isn't what you are talking about I apologize.
