Have a 78 OMC 800 coupled to a OMC 225 engine (small block chevy 305). When i shift into forward gently, the gears will grind a little then catch. If I pop it into forward, it goes without grinding but kind of with a clunk. Same with reverse, no grinding but kind of clunks. Once in gear, it seems to run smooth. Would this be related to my shift cable or something else?

Thanks

Check your idle. It should be as close to 600 rpm as possible. When you shift, make it a positive one. not slow or fast, just positive.

Also, if your carb does not have a throttle return spring on it, add one. This will help keep your idle speed consistant.

Those use a dog clutch shifting mechanism and you have to shift it quickly, not slowly or you will get a grind. The same is true of the 1st generation OMC Cobras and the Merc Alpha drive, and most outboards.
And I agree with getting the idle down as low as it will run smoothly for easier shifting.
