Question is how does the cables operate the internals of the stearn drive?
Neutral,forward,reverse...
I know if you pull on the long cable it goes into reverse? and the short one seems to put it in gear?
Thanks in advance...

Re: OMC 800 Stringer Shifting

Pacer, sounds as if you have pulled the outdrive off? Best advice if you are trying to replace a shift cable is to get a manual, like Seloc. I just replaced the cable on a 78 800 OMC. The book mentions special tools, but after talking with a mechanic I found out that a 1/4 x 20 nut on the end of a bolt would subsititute for the tool needed to remove the spline gearshaft in the shift assembly. But, you need the book to help you figure it out the first time. The cable ends rotate a spline gear, which moves a rack up or down, which is connected to a shaft, which moves the clutch dogs. Just be aware that there are diferent cables, depending on the year and the type of shift system.
