I know this is a super old post but running into same issue with my '97 7.4 GL PMDM. Same VP pickup 3854077. How did this turn out for you? What was involved in replacement? Called PerTronix and they claim they have no listing and can't recommend the 1589. Hopeful.
It's going to be pretty doubtful daniel nicholson will see this anytime soon as he hasn't been back online since Jul 16, 2019 plus this thread seems more of a public info type page for future references which is why it's asked to please create a new thread of your own... If daniel shows back up then hopefully he'll send a private message letting you know the circumstances.
Before closing this thread due to its age, I'll add as a further note to the questions regarding Volvo Penta part number 3854077 that it seems there is a kit that may work for a lot of engine models as noted in the following Ebay link,

DOES NOT include the distributor this kit is made up with the following parts
1, Black ignition Coil
2, External green Module bolted to the coil
3, Internal pickup sensor fitted to top plate (this fits inside the distributor)
