I have a 1984 OMC stringer 800 that needs the ball gear replaced. did they make different types of these gears in 1984? When I was looking for this part they mentioned a bolt on type and a pressed on type. Looking at mine if it was a bolt on the nut is corroded beyond recognition. Please let me know the best way to identify the correct part and where would be a good place to purchase it.

I believe the press on type were in the electric stringers (pre-1978) & the bolt on were on everything after.

Only the early electrics were press on..... Mine was still bolt on..... and yours should be too. Good luck

Re: OMC ball gear replacement

I have the 85 stringer with the same type of ball gears. I have removed the nut (0908064) and it look like the ball gear should just slip off without removing the drive shaft. Does this gear thread on or is it pressed on the drive shaft?
Thanks

Gear just slides onto splines on the shaft & the nut holds it on. You may need a puller to get the gear off as it will be very tight on the shaft.

Re: OMC ball gear replacement

Thanks for all the info. I guess the bolts are just that corroded that they no longer can be identified as bolts.
