OMC blowing belts

So upon taking apart my entire boat to get to the pullies I found what would appear to be the issue for blowing my alternator belt oh about once a week... which can get expensive. Turns out the two pullies weren't totally level with eachother. So after resolving that problem I take her back out to the lake and go for a ride.... She starts blowing blue smoke like crazy after about 20 minutes of smooth moving. Upon getting back to shore the belts had loosened up a little but not enough to cause them to smoke.
Anyone know what I need to look for to see what the real problem might be?? Please help

Are your pulleys rusted? Mine were and the only solution is to sand the rust completely away inside the pulley groove. Even with this, my belts have to be nice and tight or they will squeel at start up.

She used to squeel at start up but once we replaced the belts and tighted them up that quited them down. But run the engine for about 10-15 minutes and they are loose again... we're using the correct belt length and width. Gonna look and see if they are rusted. If that's not the case do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks
Kris

The front cirulation pump leaks water on the steel pulleys. Once there is rust on the pulleys it will keep eating belts. You need to change the cir. pump and all steel pulleys if you want the problem to go away.

oh and check the circ pump bearinga as well. if they are failing it will ear belts. but rusty pulleys do it fast.

Vinney / Rodbolt,

are alloy pulleys a good alternative? I've got the same problem and alloy pulleys are readily available at a local supplier in my area.

Aldo

Hi
my merc used to chew through belts until i found the battery was shagged putting a constant heavy load on the alternator.
Replace the batt even though it started and held charge ok, problem solved!
Just a thought!
