im new to the boat world but i have a problem when i start my boat for the first time of the day it take a while to start but after it starts its fine starts everytime after i have to turn the key for atleast 5-6 sec. 2 or 3 times and finally start i was wondering if my boat has a choke and i cant start my boat without it being in neutral. my boat is a 1994 caravelle 1750. i pump the throttle but i was wondering if there is a way to choke or is there a way to start with the throttle in gear or have to start in neutral thanks

1994, should have a choke so you'll need to "prime or set the choke" before a cold (first) start, to do this, either in neutral or not, move the lever either to full thottle or at least half way, that should set it.

Then you MUST Start in Neutral. for Safety Reasons you SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER Start IN Gear and if the Neutral Safety switch is not used or bypassed the person driving the boat should KNOW This and Know how to start the engine in Neutral.

If you remove the spark arrestor when the engine is cold you will see the choke plate may be a little open, or full open, this is why you need to set the choke, move the throttle lever, then recheck, it should CLOSE, If it doesn't then you may have a problem with your Choke. THe choke will then open about 1/8" when started, the continue to open as the choke thermostat opens.
