How are the reliability of the late 80's (1989) OMC cobra 3.0's? Any issues? How do they compare to merc's?

Re: OMC cobra 3.0

Really? Thats funny. i heard some cobra's had outdrive problems? Maybe not... know anything of it?

Ayuh,... That's because you asked about the Motor...

Cobra outdrives are a Problem, because OMC has been Out of Business for well over 10 years now...
Parts are harder to find,+ Help with 'em is even Hader to find than parts...

Mercruisers are a dime a dozen,+ parts can be bought almost Anywhere...

Sorry should have said engine and drive. Is it a "bad" drive design, or is it just that parts are hard to get?

a bit of each.

common wear parts like impellers are obtainable, but expensive.
Housings are really pricey.

I sold a used 3.0 Cobra drive last summer for triple what I'd get for a comparable Mercruiser unit. I think I may have let it go on the cheap side at that.

Again, it depends on which version of the "Cobra" drive.

It would be on a 1989 bayliner 20 foot bow rider, original engine... if that helps.

I dont really like the idea of not being able to get impellers easily!

Thanks for all your help so far guys, as always much appreciated!

Implellors are never going to be a problem for that drive assuming you don't mind aftermarket ones. Really, the impellors are the least of your problem.

Re: OMC cobra 3.0

Typical replacement parts are out there either OE from Evinrude dealers or aftermarket from Sierra....impellers...thermostats...even now trim senders are all available from Sierra....some oddball parts are hard to find....you'll have a much easier time with a Merc for sure...and here is a pic of the magic screw ;)

Anything wrong with a Cobra that is set up right...well NO not really other than the fact that you can't get all the parts and some mechanics have no idea how to adjust the shift linkage...I have had mine for 8 years and after it was set up right and some seals were replaced it's been no trouble at all and shifts with 2 fingers...I for one wish OMC was still in business...
