Please Help! I have a 1994 Chris Craft 19 Concept with a 302 5.0 OMC Cobra that will not come out of reverse. When the Cable is disconnected it moves fine when you shift, but when when connected the top gear on outdrive is locked in reverse position. Any ideas what can cause this problem?
I spoke to a boat mechanic and he is thinking the gears in the lower unit maybe shredded, but we seen no evidence of metal
shards in oil. Only a milky oil like water was getting in it. Here is a picture of the plate on the outdrive. I tried finding replacement outdrives, but have been unsuccessful finding this exact one.

Good morning,

Do you have a regular Cobra or the SX drive? 1994 was the transition year so you could have either one, a model number off your drive will help in diagnostics.

Which cable are you disconnecting? The helm shift cable or the transom shift cable?

Howdy,

Welcome Aboard!

First of all, have a look at the following thread. It will help you by having you describe exactly what you have and what your problem is.....

https://forums.iboats.com/forum/eng...69-must-have-technical-information-for-diyers

Then have a look at the following info, http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/

Also, if you do not have an OMC OEM service manual, and you want to do any of the work yourself now would be the time to get one!

To do that, you must first know what model you have. It could be any of the following:

502ACPMDA 1994
502AGPMDA 1994
50FACPMDA 1994
50FACPMDM 1994
50FAGPMDA 1994
50FAGPMDM 1994

502APLJVB 1993
502APRJVB 1993
502BPRJVB 1993
50FAPLJVB 1993
50FAPLJVN 1993
50FAPRJVB 1993
50FAPRJVN 1993

The 1994 models are Volvo SX models and the 1993 are OMC Dog-Clutch Cobras. You could have either. The manuals will usually indicate which models they cover.

You don't necessarily have a "trashed" drive, but if there's water in it, at the bare minimum you'll have to reseal it. If it's a Dog-clutch Cobra, if it won't come out of gear (in the water) it's usually due to a failed lower shift cable, ESA or linkage.

When you know what you have, post it here. There's a LOT of experience here!

Regards,

Rick
