OMC Cobra 4.3L engines. WHICH STARTER MOTOR

We have a Sunbird Barletta 27, with twin OMC Cobra 4.3L engines (GMC V6). It is a 1991 model boat, does anyone know which starter motors should be used on these engines?, as the serial numbers have eroded?. We know the originals were 'DELCO REMMY'.

The v-6 and the 5L and 5.7L all use<br />the same starter. The starter bolt<br />pattern may be 2 even or 2 offset.<br />Two types of starters, standard $130 or<br />gear reduction ( smaller -lighter )<br />About $ 160<br /><br />Go to basicpower.com they have pictures<br />and prices

Hmmm....<br /><br />I just replaced mine with one from AutoZone...I have a 1987 OMC 4.3L. The one that matched the starter installed was $30 and the high-torque model was $130.

The 1 for $30.00, Isn't a Marine Starter.......<br />Using it Can,+ Will lead to Catastrophic Fires.........<br /><br />Any of the Gear Reduction type are Fine......

Catastrophic fires....too bad I don't have insurance on this boat yet..... JK!<br /><br />So, there is a difference in the starter (marine vs non-marine). Is it just in the fire hazard issue or is there differences in the gear spacing etc?

If it is not a marine starter, it is not spark protected, and if there are gas vapors in the bilge and you start the boat it could go BOOM!<br />and there may well be liability if an auto starter installed by the owner caused anyone else to be injured this way. So get it out of there!

According to the Parts Book, V6 and V8 OMC stern drives from 1985 to 1992 use the #3855177 starter motor.

Gonna have to bring the boat to a shop this weekened to get a new flywheel anyways so will either have them replace it or do it myself. My question was not suggesting that I wasn't going to change it but that I have to replace my flywheel (many teeth gone) and was wondering if the few attempts to start it with this starter was the culprit.<br /><br />Thanks.
