OMC Cobra 4.3L Overheated badly in "park"...

The boat's battery ran flat after I accidentally left the nav lights on during the day four days ago. The boat is sitting on a dock-mounted boat lift, so I dropped the lift so the leg is well below the surface. I boosted the battery and started the engine to charge the battery a bit. It was quietly idling for about 30mins. when smoke came from the engine. I immediately turned it off and opened the engine cover. Nearly had a panic attack when I saw that the two plastic elbows connecting two pipes that run from the airbox to the valve covers had melted into something resembling black lava. The engine was hotter than I had ever seen a gas motor get. My fear is that the engine overheated badly and didn't get water, but why? How can it be if the leg was well below the water and the engine running so smoothly and quietly? What can the damage be and where should I start looking? Shall I replace the two elbows and try to run the boat for a short distance? What else can go wrong in this situation - I hear horrors about cooked exhaust bellows etc etc. Please help!

Howdy,

Well, you found out that the raw water pump will not self-prime.

When the boat is sitting in the water (with the water level about the same height as the pump), the pump has a positive "head" pressure on it..........I.E. the water will go right into the pump input.....once primed, (assuming no air leaks) you could then lift the boat higher with the engine running and it would still draw water up into the pump (although I don't know why you would do that.......)

If the drive is out of the water far enough to have only the water pick-up submerged, it will not draw water up into the pump unless you prime it first. (none of them will)

So, you likely destroyed the raw water impeller, and probably cooked the rubber parts in the exhaust system in addition to overheating the engine.

DO NOT run the engine until you replace the raw water impeller. I would also expect impeller fragments to be where they shouldn't be too.....

Sorry about that.....

Thanks for the response Rick, I will get a mechanic out and explain this to him... Sad thing is I replaced the exhaust bellows, gaskets and impeller last year as part of a full rebuild...Gustav

Yeah. It always sux when the raw pump fails......they'll self destruct in less than a min running "dry"!!
