Wondering if anyone can tell me for sure if the fly wheels for a 5.0(302) is the same as a flywheel for a 5.8(351)

I recently purchased a 1992 Chris Craft Crowne 272, and i am in process of replacing the two 302's to 351's

The 351's are OMC 5.8(351) motors, just want to make sure the flywheels are the same

Had a good friend tell me that on auto 302's, and 351's the fly wheels are not the same, so i am a little worried!

Re: OMC cobra 5.0 to 5.8

The flywheel ring gears are both the same part number, yet the flywheel part numbers are different - The flywheel coupler and coupling studs have the same part numbers for both engines. so, the bolt pattern, and connection to the engine would have to be the same

There are 2 different sub models for the starter, AMH or AMK - they both are a different starters, I don't know if the difference in the starter is ring teeth reach or not. Which could affect how the ring gears sit on the flywheel. Most likely not though, it would not be advantageous for them to make 2 different flywheels that use the same ring gear.. not cost effective.

As far as your friend telling you that auto 302/351 flywheels are different, they are not, they are the same for both engines

hmmmmm.... I am guessing they are the same, but don't take my word on it... because they do have different part numbers ( 303 vs. 304 ) But, they could change the part number and it still be the same part, they do this so they can get a premium for the part. Like on a Porsche 924, the engine is the same as a VW Rabbit, yet if you say Porsche starter it cost 150 dollars more than the same one on the VW

If they have the same number of teeth and the same counter weight your good to go. count teeth and look at the weight on the front side of the wheel. ( go to Ebay and look at pictures of 28 oz and 50
