HELP! I cant find anyone that is qualified to work on my lower unit, or let me say someone willing to work on it . Everyone just wants to put a new one on because they say the labor charges would be more to break it down and see whats wrong. It currently is only a 2 year old unit with less than 25 hours (actually its a refurb unit from Tri State Marine). Is there anywhere I can send it off to and have it overhauled for a lot less than a new one?

I know this wont help you out, but I think people do not know enough about stern drives at most boat places (at least ones I have been to) to fix them.

It seems its easier to just tell you that you need a new one, then they swap it make more money and dont have to really worry about warranty..

Look around you will find someone that may be able to fix it for you. good luck

well at $90/hr (or more) in most certified repair shops, yeah, its gonna be cheaper to go with a whole new unit than have someone rebuild the drive for you

figure $1000 in parts for one half (upper or lower) plus 6-8 hrs on the rebuild, yep thats teardown, cleaning and inspecting all internal parts, re-shimming new gear sets, re assambly, pressure test, and final testing - $1800-$2000 - thats ball park

used to be cheaper to re-build, now its just replace

and OMC Cobras are becoming more and more scarce so its the antiquity factor too - last one to come off the OEM line was in 1992!!

Sterndrive.info

They sell the drives and you can send your drive to them and they will fix it. They do alot of omc stuff.

Not sure whats wrong, whenever it is put in reverse and power applied it starts jerking and grinding pretty violently. Doesnt do this in forward throttle position.

You can also try All American Drive Service in Michigan. I just shipped my Cobra drive to them today for rebuilding.
