I just had my local mechanic rebuild/service my OMC Cobra outdrive. I had chewed up the forward gear end of last season so I took it to him for repair. After he tore it down he noted that the forward gear and the clutch dog needed to be replaced. Everything else was fine, he said I was lucky. Maybe I was...I paid him $1600 for the job. I have used the boat once and maybe ran it around for about 2 hours total. I went to use it this week-end and noticed oil (90#)coming out of the water by-pass hole on the starboard side of the lower assembly (weird). I crack the dip-stick to check the lube and it stunk to holly ****. And appeared to be a bit low. I preceded to drain the lube out and noticed quite a bit of metal on the magnets drain plug and fill plug. It seemed to me that the oil was very dirty and there was also a lot of visible metal in the oil itself. Not big pieces but glittering metal all the same. I have run 9 qts of lube through it now thinking that it may be left over from the rebuild. The mechnic said he thoroughly cleaned the whole system before putting it back together. Why would there be oil coming from that by-pass water hole? I would think that there should not be the metal I am finding in there either. Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated

You have a seal that is leaking. Did he replace all the seals?
