I have a 1991 Chris Craft with a 5 liter OMC Cobra HO ford block with only 380 hrs , never looked at any numbers on the engine before it got dark tonight, and my manual is MIA. Here is my issue:
I have a 12 volt accessory plug that only works with the key in the run possition, and left it on through out the day to run my fridge/ cooler. The boat always ran great until I did this. After half an hour on run, I went for a ski and it stumbled and missed trying to get up to full rpm at wot, then slowly cleared up. Repeated my time on the beach engine off with key on run for another hour and the provlem came back for a short time on the next run on the lake. A third time sitting in a cove for three hours in the run possition things got worse than ever. Crossing the lake I could never get it to run smooth over 2500 rpm at 3/4 throttle, any more throttle and it would miss, backfire repeatedly and slow in speed. my guess is I burnt out the coil as the batteries were still at 12 volts and the alternator seemed to be putting out power. It is a mechanical fuel pump, and had almost 3/4 tank of fuel. I am leaning towards ignition problems but don't want to shoot from the hip on buying and tring new parts.:confused:Also, there has not been any recient tune ups or changes, so nothing done wrong. No huge wave jumps or the likes. I grabbed the distributor and tried to move itt, but it was secure, as were all the wires on the cap and plugs. Help

If your ignition fires with points, and I'm only guessing it does, then you'll need a fresh set, leaving the key on for that long will burn the contacts depending on their position. I'm not sure how it would effect eloctronic spark boxes.

New coil and points are cheap, and a good place to start. Might fix your troubles for around $40-$50.

Maybe consider re-wiring your accessory plug so that the ignition doesn't have to be on to provide power.

It was in fact the coil, changed it and ran good out on the lake.

Now you need to wire up a 12 volt plug in that does not require the key to be on...;)
