Hey everyone
I currently have an omc cobra 5.7l with a cobra outdrive 1989 model.
My question is in the event I trash my gears, hit something n the water, etc. What are my options as far as possibly convertins to a volvo penta, mercrusier, etc. I was just thinkiing that if something major ever did happe. I my be better off going to an ougdrive that parts are not so hard to come by. Also what would have to be done to make a swap like this happen? Would anything have to be done to the engine??
thanks for everyons help

I looked at the SEI conversion its around 1500 I believe total all its says is the shifting has to be changed push instead of pull something like that but as far as the engine it all stays the same...

Is the SEI for 1500 include the outdrive or is that just parts to adapt to another outdrive

http://www.sterndrive.cc depending on what drive the 1500 is for the whole drive set up drive and another 350 for the gimbal ring adapter and then gaskets etc but to me its still better than spending 1000- 1500 to rebuild the cobra

It's probably going to cost you about $2000 in round numbers once you've bought the "kit", drive and replaced the other "stuff" you should replace. (bellows, gimbal bearing, etc.....)

Your other option might be to buy a complete used Mercruiser "package" (engine, gimbal, drive, trim pump etc)

Then remove all the OMC junk and replace with the Mercruiser junk.

Prices there will of course depend on how much you pay for all the Mercruiser junk. and how much you can "OFF" the OMC junk for.

(I sold all my OMC junk for a total of $3500........parting it all out separately over a couple of years

I still think the best option is the sei conversion there's nothing wrong with the Omc trim and gimball assembly the cobra gets it bad rap from the hard to adjust shifting and the gears exploding but besides the log style manifold that sucked With the conversion you get a three year no ? Asked warranty. For two k complete that's a deal

A SEI is a nice drive, it's more like 2k when you're done in parts but you have a 3 year warranty.

Another option would be a Volvo SX or DP-S, both which are based on the Cobra. They fit onto the Cobra transom assembly, however you do need to add an engine-mounted water pump and the associated hoses. They are pricey but they are the best drive.

They are an option, but they do not fit on the OMC transom assembly without some modifications. It takes a different pivot housing and spacers inside the trim cylinders.

Re: omc cobra conversion

After buying my boat, it looks like both the engine and the outdrive are shot.I kind of expected as much since I got it for a song. Its an 89 Bayliner capri with the OMC Cobra outdrive, am I hearing correctly that I can take a complete mercruiser motor, outdrive etc without modifying the transom in any way? If so please advise

Howdy,

Basically yes.

FOr example, I removed the OMC 460 King Cobra engine and drive from the boat in my signature and replaced it with my current engine and stern drive. Because I replaced with a Bravo, I had to drill 2 additional holes for the 2 additional studs in the bravo transom mount.

Other than having to slightly relocate the engine mounts it was pretty much a "drop-in" swap.

Rick

Re: omc cobra conversion

Hi Everyone,
I am currently converting from the omc cobra drive to the Volvo sx cobra drive, I have mounted the engine mounted water pump, the hoses that came with the kit are 1-1/4" id, which fit the pump fine but the water tube is a 1" pipe, also the oil cooler is a 7/8" hose fitting. has anyone done this conversion? what did you do with the water lines? do you have any picks?
