was out at the lake today in new to me 88 Bayliner Capri 3.0 4cyl, boat ran great but noticed at cruising at no wake speed it would jump out of gear till i gave it alittle more throttle...didn't think too much more about it as just advancing the throttle seemed to help.....few more laps around lake no problems, went to pick some friends up off the beach and now it won't go in forward gear...little bit of a clicking sound of it trying to engage but won't...just revs up

works in reverse, any ideas...Thanks in advance

Lower shift cable is out of adjustment/needs replaced.

Re: OMC Cobra Drive Problem

Probably a worn lower shift cable. The bad part is the gears are now most likely junk. An improperly adjusted or tight cable will destroy the gears in a cobra.

That can get super expensive... I would attempt a lower shift cable replacement first, make sure the cable/ESA is in order, and then if the drive doesn't work properly, then look in to your options for repair or conversion/replacement...

thanks guys, if i went with replacing outdrive what would be my best option to convert over to...?

im hearing you have a 1 time shot at gear and cable replacement, if not adjusted properly could chew the new gears right up....never fails I could see this happening with my luck

I would try to readjust shift cable first... You could be lucky...

Re: OMC Cobra Drive Problem

I took it to an OMC mechanic today, he seems to think the gears are ok but won't know till he gets it off, said he is 98% sure its just the lower cable...he is gonna call after he gets it apart

$275 for cable and replacement don't seem to bad, Keeping my fingers crossed

will post what i find out

If your description was accurate, it isnt a spun prop hub. Hubs dont click.

new prop didn't fix it, goes in gear fine out of the water but under a load it won't go, putting on a new lower cable

Re: OMC Cobra Drive Problem

I wouldn't advise even considering the conversion until you verify that your OMC drive isn't serciveable! If I had done this at the beginning I would have wasted a perfectly good lower unit that has ran great for me ever since I figured it out.

The lower shift cable isn't hard to adjust or replace, if you do your homework.

There is a member here who sells both the linkage and bellcrank brackets that makes installing the new cable a breeze.

Before I had my new cable adjusted properly the prop would "click" when I turned the prop by hand with the boat in neutral. It soulds like this is your problem, only worse.

Put your trim up and take a peak behind it, on the starboard side, where the lower shift cable enters the lower. The cable is covered with a sheath, but that is usually where it goes bad and when it does you can usually see it (frayed sheath/wires/cable).

Re: OMC Cobra Drive Problem

yea , i don't have the cash for a conversion,

I just looked at the cable and its not frayed, could be just gunked up inside, it acts like it goes in gear out of the water (prop wont turn in forward) but in the water under a load it clicks and dont go, works in reverse fine

im not very mechanical and would surely mess it up even more, taking it to another OMC tech today
