Hey I am new to the forums so I want to say hi and thanks to anyone that might be able to help.

I have a 1993 Four Winns 190 Horizon which has an OMC Cobra Drive 5.0L. We took it out for the first time and with any old boat we found a few bugs we need to work out. The biggest issue we had was when shifting from neutral to rev or drive it would engage and the engine will load up and stall. Now I have read a few things about engine stalls when shifting but with mine I can just give the boat a little power and it will not stall. The other issue with this is, if I lower the power to idle and still in gear it will stall so we need to have a slightly higher setting in the throttle to keep it going but it's a bit too fast and makes it a bit more challenging docking. I have a feeling it might need an adjustment to the idle setting as I might be a bit too low to keep the engine going, out of the water it will shift with no issue and stay running, it's just the load of the prop in the water that seems to be too much.

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,...... 5.0l Chevy, or Ford,.....

It sounds like the idle circuit in the carb is dirty, or plugged up,......

Idle should be 650, 750 rpms in the water, in gear,.....

welcome aboard

in addition to the idle circuit that Bondo Mentioned, you may need to adjust the shift cable

also, when docking, many times you just blip it into gear once in a while as needed to adjust the course as you float towards the dock vs leaving it in gear and attempting to power to the dock

Also when docking, remember even in neutral drifting, you still have some steering.

Sounds like idle too low and maybe the idle mix could be looked at.

Good luck.

Sounds like a carbed boat that needs a carb cleaning and tune up. The standard OMC idle speed setting is 500-600 in gear on the water. If the idle is too high it can cause trouble getting into neutral from fwd or rev....

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

It sometimes helps if you post your model number.

You boat could be one of the following engine/drive packages.

502APLAMH 1992
502APLAMK 1992
502APRAMH 1992
502APRAMK 1992
502BPRAMH 1992
502BPRAMK 1992

502APLJVB 1993
502APRJVB 1993
502BPRJVB 1993
50FAPLJVB 1993
50FAPLJVN 1993
50FAPRJVB 1993
50FAPRJVN 1993

While there's not a lot of differences between all of the above, there are some...

Sounds like you have 2 problems going there, carb/throttle cable and possibly lower shift cable problem/adjustment.

If you want to trouble-shoot and repair, and do not have have an OEM OMC (NOT Seloc/Clymer/Etc) service manual for your specific model, now would be a good time to get one.

Cheers,

Rick
