OMC Cobra Electrical Problem

I have a 93 CC 238 with a 5.7 Cobra w/ dual battery set-up. I just replaced the alternator several weeks ago (wasn't charging) and on the first day out, broke the alternator belt. Figuring it might have been worn, I replaced it this week. When I took it out, the belt began to smoke on the new alternator pulley. Thought maybe it wasn't tight enough or the batteries too low. Charged both and tightened the belt and the problem went away. We ran for about 30 minutes with no problems, shut it down for a couple minutes and when I started back up, the belt started squeaking and smoking again. When I shut it down and tried to restart it, the ignition selenoid didn't work. I bypassed it to get her runnning again and limped back. Once tied up she started fine again.

I am completely perplexed by this, I've tried everything: Belt alignment, cleaned all pulleys, good batteries, new selector switch, battery cables. It would make sense if the problem was constant, I just can't unerstand why it is intermitten? This has to be something simple that I am missing?????

Re: OMC Cobra Electrical Problem

I've alternated between three different batteries (in various combinations) to make sure one of them wasn't bad. Since the POS on th alternator is terminated on the assist selenoid, could this be shorted and be causing the problem. I've never seen that happen, but at this point, I'm pretty desperate.

Re: OMC Cobra Electrical Problem

Alternator is single wire. The only thing I generally have running when under way is the blower. I've tested with only that on and its draw is very little. The alternator has an internal regulator, so that is new also...
