OMC Cobra impeller housing seal problem?

Hi,

Thanks everyone for your advice with my previous questions! This forum is so very helpful... Thanks so much!

I am new to boat ownership, just bought an '88 Wellcraft 192 Classic 19foot with OMC Cobra 4.3 I/O. Unfortunately a few things were very wrong once I trailered her home and really started going through it all (of course it ran strong and perfect during the test drive).

After viewing some topics on the impeller, I thought I'd take a look at it to see if it needed replacement. Off came the plate, then the housing, then I noticed a decent amount of corrosion between the outdrive and gasket (transom side) and it looks like some kind of liquid gasket was used here to keep it sealed against the rough corroded area of the outdrive.

I am concerned that this is going to leak and cause problems, but I don't really know if this is critical or not. I bolted it back on (not even very tight) and noticed the housing posts for the bolts were stressing and cracked against the housing a little. Don't know if I broke it during tightening or if it was cracked already. I proceeded to tighten them as much as I could without stressing the cracks.

Any advice here? Should I completely clean/scrape the corrosion away and get a new gasket (will that work?) or will I need to go the liqued gasket route to patch things up knowing the only fix is going to be a new outdrive? How critical is this seal? Is my housing OK or does it need replacement? If it leaks a little is it ok for a while? I have yet to start the engine (waiting for new starter) and inspect for leaks...

I also have some tilt line problems and shifter cable adjustments to make (hard shifting occasional clunking into idle forward) so I know I have to pull the outdrive and engine eventually, but I'm hoping I can run her a few times this summer before she's torn apart and landlocked for some time. Hopefully I can get this impeller housing seal issue at least temporarily solved.

One more question.. the temp and oil press indications are inop.. the gauges look fine but the pressure sender is corroded and looks like it needs replacement, but I don't know where the temp sender is to inspect.. where can I find this gizmo? Shop manual has yet to arrive...

Thanks so much for the help!

Best,

DC

Re: OMC Cobra impeller housing seal problem?

i believe there's an o ring that fits inside that housing. change it & seal it with ultra black. u need a good seal or it may suck air. i'm not sure where the temp sender is n that engine, but it's probably near the t- stat housing, port side. when u find it remove the wire. get another wire & ground out the sender to the engine block. watch the temp gauge, if the needle moves to the right the gauge is ok.
