Hi everyone, new here and really need some advise. I looking at buying a 89 sea ray seville with a 4.3. I was told when the boat was parked 2 years ago everything worked great. After taking the boat to go over it I found the prop will not spin while in neutral with the engine off. I have moved the shifter back and forth but still cannot get the prop to spin. I haven't started the engine yet. Any ideas of where I should start to look. Thanks

Oh, and the prop does have a little bit of play back and forth

I'm assuming the motor does turn over? You say not started but have you cranked it at least? And honestly if you have not yet purchased the boat i would look for a non omc.

IMHO - I'm with Joe. You should look at another boat :) Or at least that one should be free.

OMC isn't kiss of death for me (they've been outta' business for quite a while), but a frozen up, don't work OMC isn't worth the hassle most of the time (some would say EVER).

Didn't Bondo use a frozen up OMC for a boat anchor (mooring anchor). I agree with above. I would pass on an OMC unless the boat has strong sentimental ties

Ok thanks for the replies everyone. It's a Pretty good chance I can get it for free. Yes I have cranked the motor over.just pulled the plug wires so it wouldn't fire. To me,it seems like it's stuck in gear

I don't know the Cobras, but it sounds like a gear case may be locked up on you.

Howdy,

Welcome Aboard!

If the engine "turns" with the starter, the drive is not "locked up" (unless you already removed the drive)

In many cases, a "free" OMC powered (or any) boat that is NOT in perfect running condition, will end up costing you more than one that is.

If everything else is "ok", you can simply replace the drive with a used one or install an SEI drive kit.

But then, carefully consider if the boat will be worth the roughly $2000 you'll spend doing the kit and fixing everything else wrong with it.

If the boat resides in an area that experiences freezing temps, and the boat has been sitting for a long time, you can probably assume that since the boat has had poor maintenance, it also did NOT get winterized properly. (expect a cracked block UNLESS you verify with a cooling system pressure check)

If it does have a cracked block, you'll have a "free" boat with negative value that you have to dispose of.

Regards,

Rick
