We're trying to sort out a cooling water flow problem on our Cobra/351W 5.8 FI. New engine. Old outdrive. Salvage boat, so we don't know why the original engine crapped out, but we're getting suspicious that we are close to learning that.
Yesterday boating at just over idle we were great, then when we got to open water and opened up we quickly blew out both rubber exhaust tubes on the engine. Replaced those this a.m.
Today, I popped the cover on what seems to be the upper unit gearcase and it's full of light green mousse.
We can't figure out where the exhaust cooling water is supposed to be flowing out of. Our diagram suggests that it should flow out of a spot just aft of the intake, which it isn't. At idle with muffs, we get warm outflow through the small hole forward of the intakes, and along the leading edge of the entire unit. All flow ceases when we rev the engine.
Maybe anecdotally, we occasionally get surging engine, although never when the mechanic is nearby.
Hopefully some of this will ring a bell with someone smarter than we are! Thanks for any help!
