Hey all. Just but a project for my retired father and I. 1985 Blue Water 16' bowrider. Believe it to be a Blazer series. Trying to figure out what exact engine so I can get a manual, but can't find a model number anywhere. It is defin a OMC 4cyl 3.0L with SN:M08134RB. How can I tell if its a 84' or 85' motor, and how can I tell if its a cobra or not? Thanks guys

Re: OMC COBRA or NOT???

Take a pic of the outdrive. I beleive this *could* be a stringer.

The rear engine mount is bolted to the stinger. Me thinks she may be a stringer....

Re: OMC COBRA or NOT???

Okay, not a Cobra. So OMC manual 507551 should work for me then, right? Oh, and can you clarify what is meant by a stringer, stinger? Model 302FTHRCOM,302SPHRCOM,302STHRCOM are the 3, 3.0L OMC motors I see produced by OMC in 1985. Is there a way to tell if my motor is one of these?

They refer to this drive as a stringer, because everything on this drive system relies on the boats stringers to both support the engine/drive, and to accept the force made by the drive to push the boat.

A conventional drive system (Volvo Penta, Mercruiser, the Cobra drive, etc) use the stringers to support the front of the engine. While the transom supports the back of the engine, along with the weight and the force of the drive.

I would sniff around on the engine to see if you can find any more numbers (others may be able to give you a better idea on where to look). What you most likely have found for numbers is the GM suffix code stamped on the block, which is really only a concern to GM.
Suffix code decodes to; M (GM of mexico) 08 (August) 13 (thirteenth day) 4RB (is the engine code, can't find a decoding for it, but most likely something along the lines of 1984/85, 3.0L, HP, Marine.)
