I have a 1989 Donzi Ragazza 23 cc with an OMC 5.7 Chevy and a cobra outdrive. This will be the first time i de-winterize it and want to know if I need to change the oil in the outdrive. Is there even oil in the outdrive? I have asked several people and I can't seem to get a straight answer. I will be changing the oil in th emotor soon but should I worry about doing the same to the outdrive?

Some have said that I should get the outdrive serviced every year. And have a professional boat shop replace the oil and seals. SHould I?

thanks,

The Cobra outdrive does have gear oil.It should be replaced every year and checked for water intrusion.
You can use Mobile 1 75w90 GL-5 rated gear oil.
I think that drive holds 64 ounces.

If you have never filled a Cobra drive its best to let a shop do it.They are easy to get air in the drive and it not really be full.

It is best to have the drive pulled every year and the U-joints greased and the bellows inspected.

Loosen the drain plug with the drive tilted up it's easier to access, once you have the plug cracked loose lower the drive and place a clean dry catch pan, remove the plug being carefull to not loose the gasket sometimes it will just stick to the drive and stay put you can get it once the oil has drained, loosen the dip stick and the oil will then come out full stream, I like to leave it drain overnight, you can work on removing the center fill plug while the oil is draining, after it's all drained replace the drain plug and gasket. Now just slowly pump in 64oz of lube through the center fill plug, the dipstick must remain out while filling so the air has somewhere to escape, now seat the dipstick and replace the fill plug and gasket, go back and check the oil level and don't be too woried if it's a little above full as it will settle once you run the engine.

I like to use the Merc high performance synthetic oil (the green stuff)

Thanks guys. Sounds like its easy to do. Im a retty handy guy so I think I'll be OK. I'm sure a shop will charge me a few hundred to do this and i would rather avoid that cost at this time.

Make sure you replace the gaskets and o-ring. They should be replaced everytime you change the gear oil.

Re: OMC Cobra Outdrive Oil Change?

I will replace the oil the weekend after Easter. I was able to find some very good instructions on how to do this at:

http://www.sterndrive.info/id270.html

Can you guys give me some tips on what to watch for while replacing the oil? which o-rings/gaskets should I replace?

Also while winterizing the boat last year I noticed a slight leak from the upper units cover assembly. It is the cover right below the dipstick cover. I am guessing this is not good. Any ideas on what could be causing this leak? Gaskets? maybe water pump?

thanks,

I meant the washers/o-rings on the 3 plugs that you will be removing.

Make sure the oil is not milky. That would mean water has goten into your drive and you will need to pressure test it to see what is leaking.

As far as the oil leak, are you talking about the cover that is on the back of the drive that has the water pump underneath it? Have you taken it off to look yet?

the cover I am talking about is #39 in the link listed below. I think it covers the water pump. the water is coming out from underneath of this cover. I have not taken it off yet. Any ideas?

Re: OMC Cobra Outdrive Oil Change?

Ok... so i took off the cover from the outdrive and as it turns out there is no hose (#47 in the above link) on the water pump at all. It looks like there is a small spicket on the water pump which i assume the small hose #47 attached to and goes into the small hole under the pump. Kind of like a water return hose???

When the baot is running, water comes out of the "small spicket" and flows out from under the cover since there is no hose attached.

What is this for? Can i just get any small hose and attach it? I can buy the exact part from the link above but at $24.99 shipping it's not a great deal at all for a small part like that.

Can i get theis here on Iboats? or can i just make my own?

thanks,

Luke

It's just a hose. Go to any auto parts store and get vacuum tube in the same size and you're in business.

Make sure you fill from the bottom or you will put air in the OD and stand a good chance of ruining the OD.

Besides posting to an old thread, you posted incorrect information on filling a Cobra drive. They get filled from the middle.
