http://www.funkopolis.com:8080/~stuart/cobra/

Visit this site. Read, read, read. Then print, go out to boat and make each adjustment step by step.

I have a Cobra too. I had the stiff shifting problem. It will only occur in the water when the prop is loaded.

Cobra's are good drives but they have to be adjusted perfectly or major damage can occur.

I also have a omc cobra. On side of carb there is a plate with 2 micro switches. While it is running in neutral puch in on the top switch,it should stumble the engine. If the engine idle rpms are to high it won't shift well.I have mine set at about 600 in gear. Also as it says on the web page posted above,if your shift cable, the one going from side of carb to drive unit is black in color it needs to be changed to the red one.The black one had problems. And again the adjustments on this drives shift cable are critical.

suspect the same is happening to my omc 4.3L. engine runs fine but when in the water goes into gear and runs fine, but when I decellerate or go to neutral suddenly all shifting is gone, almost unshiftable? could this situation cause a tapping noise up throught the engine. sound goes away if and when I find neatral?

Your idle is probably too high. Has to be around 600 or the shift interrupt has no effect, making shifting very difficult.
