I have an OMC Cobra 3.0l engine and matching outdrive. I have changed the circ water tube on the leg and have changed the oil in the top gearbox. The problem is there is no drain plug or filler / level plug on the lower gearcase? How can i change the oil or does the bottom drive shaft run dry? I have been a marine engineer for 38 years and have never come across a lower gearcase on either an out drive or outboard without a drain plug. Am i missing something? Thanks.

Well I don't know what you have but that is not right at all. Maybe the drain and fill plugs have been painted over so many times you can't see em. The OMC Cobra has a drain plug on the lower fwd starboard side of the lower unit and the fill plug also on the starboard fwd side is up by the upper edge of the lower unit. There is no 'upper' or 'lower' reservoir for gear oil, it flows between the 2. And if you don't put enough in, you will toast the upper gears for sure. Most take a bit more than 2 qts.

I agree. I cannot think of any outboard or leg that has no fill or drain plug but believe me this has neither. Will get photo tomorrow if i get chance. Its a real misnomer. I have had a scratch about where they are meant to be and defo not painted over. I sucked the oil out of the top g/box today and cannot find anyway that the oil would get from there to the bottom onless it goes down under the gearwheel. Its hard to see from a schematic.

the Volvo legs have the drain behind the prop forcing you to pull the prop for anode inspection, spline grease and seal inspection.

Post a pic of what you got, I can't wait to see a Cobra with no drain/fill plugs!
