Hello All,

I just joined. I recently purchased a 1990 Four Winns 195 Freedom Cuddy Cabin.
My question is this. Can the prop shaft seals of an OMC Cobra be replaced without having to remove the lower unit and outdrive? If so, what is the best plan of action?

Ok. No response to the original question, so I did some research. I believe it is possible to remove the double bearing housing and replace the oil seals and possibly the bearings in there if damaged without removing the lower unit. Please correct me if I am wrong. Is it best to pull the double bearing housing with threaded rod in two of the bolt holes at the front of the bearing housing or two hooks on the front on a hub puller?

I just use two hooks to pull the carrier.
Make sure to clean the area really well and let it dry really good.
You dont want to introduce any dirt into the gear case.
If you are really patient and good you can replace the seals without removing the carrier.

Thanks Idle. I couldn't see any need to remove the lower gear case just to replace the oil seals in the bearing carrier. Unfortunately, I believe the seal that is leaking is the forward O' Ring and I want to check the bearings too because a prop to the rocks is what started the leak.

Update: Bought a battery tie down kit planning to use the tie down screws to pull the bearing carrier, but decided to just give it a good yank and to my surprise it came right out. I was able to get the rear oil seals out using an oil seal puller I had to replace the same on my transmission. The hardest part was getting it to stay still without a bench vice. I put it all back together and it no longer leaks.
