I have a 1990 OMC Cobra out drive hooked to a 5.8 L Ford V-8. When I shift into reverse gear, it bogs down the motor and makes it sound like it is surging. (loading up) After about 5-10 seconds it will finally get better. It does not grind going into gear, but is does severly load down the engine for about 10 seconds. Reverse does not work when the engine is bogging down. Any thoughts?

Howdy,

you have a lower shift cable and/or shift system problem. Your ESA is activating when it should NOT (which should be momentary when coming out of gear)

Read the following, http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/

Cheers,

Re: omc cobra reverse engaging problem

Thankyou for that link, it was very helpful and informative. After I adjusted the linkage following the procedure on the link, I found that the cutout switch would engage just before full throttle. I found that I had to adjust the overall length of the red shift cable where it attaches to the shift linkage bracket on the motor. Then I readjusted the linkage and cables following the procedure by Stuart and it worked good.
Thanks again.
