OMC Cobra Shift Issues

Hello all. I have inherited my grandfathers boat a few years back and never had any problems with it till now. The boat (88 or 89 OMC Cobra) will go into forward neutral and reverse only if the motor is all the way down. If it is trimmed up a little it doesn’t shift into reverse or neutral it will stay in forward. After reading multiple posts my plan is to change the shift cable. It looks like the red sheath has pulled away where it attaches to the outdrive itself. I just want to see if anyone has any other suggestions that might be different. Thanks

You might want to check the measurement on the cable adjuster as this is critical in the shifting operation. Just a half turn off and it will be a nightmare to shift. You can buy a OMC cable adjustment tool that you simply hook drop your cable into and screw the barrel till it lines up. That is if your cable isn't stretched or kinked. OMC clutch dogs have a bad rep. Hope this helps
