I have a omc cobra 3.0 outdrive that will shift into forward and grind when trying to shift into reverse. I can adjust the cable to do the opposite. It has a new red cable so I'm hoping I don't have to replace it. If I do have to replace it, I have studied the head causing posts that relate it this. Any ideas out there?

Take the drive off and check the shift mechanism. The bellcrank might be corroded? It's gonna be tricky to reinstall.
Without the right tools you need to remember the settings. The turns of the spacer and where it was set. Easier to get the right tools.

Is there anyway to adjust the shift cable without taking the outdrive off?

I actually took the outdrive off and noticed that the bellcrank was loose, it would rotate up and down freely. I tightened the hex bolt that holds it down, now the boat shifts with my pinky. Thanks for all the help and advice from everyone. Sidenote: I bought a Lazer level and it measured my bellcrank to 90 degrees! Thanks again for everyones advice.

Good to know. Never heard anyone mention the laser level technique. I'm pulling my drive off in the coming weeks.

You want to use the tool. The old OMC manual used to tell you to use a straightedge which is better than a laser level could possibly do and they changed the manual to use the tool.
