OMC Cobra strange noise only when in Gear

Ok, well the past few weeks our boat has been making almost like a grinding noise when you put it into gear, forward and reverse, but it stops when you put it in neutral.
Almost like a grinding noise, like a bearing. It shifts in and out of gear just fine. The boat still runs great. There are almost 900 hours on this boat.
The boat is a 1994 Four Winns 215 Sundowner with the 5.8L with the OMC Cobra out drive.
When we have it out the trailer we can spin the prop and it spins just fine.
What is this noise I'm hearing?
Thanks

The noise is there all the time and not just while going into gear?

The noise is only there once you put it in gear, when it's in neutral, it's quiet. But once you put it in gear and the prop starts spinning, then it's there all the time, and once you give it gas, the noise gets gradually louder, like it's a bearing or something.

IF it is bearing noise, then it can really only be propshaft bearings, as every other bearing in the drive is rotating anytime the engine is running.

Agree.. grab the prop and try jiggling the shaft, it shouldn't have any play other then in and out.

everthing is tight, it doesn't really make a noise when you spin it, it makes a little scratching sound, but nothing major, it spins freely

Have you drained the oil to inspect it? You may have a rusted or corroded bearing from water in the lower unit.

Could be something easy like low on oil. did you check it? When was the drive serviced last? It makes sense you only hear the grinding in gear. When in neutral nothing is moving.

If it was low enough on oil to cause the lower to make noise, why do you suppose the upper isn't noisy? It would be empty of oil long before the lower was.

The oil is fine, we checked that and it is up to snuff. It was serviced I believe this spring, because a U-Joint went out, and had the worked on and they did a check to make sure there was nothing else wrong.
