Omc Cobra Sx Impeller Replacement

I've got a 2000 Volvo Penta 5.0 L with a Cobra SX outdrive that overheated. I've been told the impeller needs replacement and the lower unit needs to be dropped to do this. I have also read that some OMC outdrives have the impeller located under the upper unit's back cover and it can be done without dropping the entire unit.

Does anyone have info on this and what I need to do to replace it? I'm and old muscle car guy and pretty handy with cars, but haven't toyed with anything on my boat to this extent.

It's under the cover.

No more running the drive without a water supply, eh?

I took my toy over to a marina mechanic my friend highly recommended and he verified the water pump on the 5.0 VP with a Cobra SX is engine mounted like my car and doesn't have a circulating pump like other models. I opted to let him go at it since he can get me up and running in time for the 4th Holiday instead of me wasting my weekend pretending to be the expert. He wants to give it the once over before saying anything, and also commented that "this is the cleanest damn engine" he has ever seen for a 10 year old boat. One thing's for sure, the mooks at the marina on the lake that I frequent who told me they had to drop the lower unit to get to it won't be hearing from me anymore.

Your title was in error also. You do not have anything OMC. OMC went out of buisness in 1998. Gone ..... NO MORE. What you have is a Volvo SX outdrive. Not OMC or Cobra anymore.

Another misconception. The Volvo engine has an engine driven raw water pump, AND an engine circulating pump. They do different things, but it takes both to cool your engine properly.

He probably doesn't realize that the thing on the front of the crank is a raw water pump (which is probably what went bad)... There is ALSO the regular circulating pump (like a regular automotive water pump) which is probably what he is looking at and thinking it is the only pump.
