On my OMC control below the knob that adjusts the tension of the throttle is a female plug. It has 3 holes to fit a male plug with 3 pins. That plug is covered with a cap that says "5 amp max." What is that plug for???

Re: OMC Control question

What engine, HP model number, year.

In absence of other info I'd guess that it is an AC output for lighting but you will have to refer to the handbook to determine the wiring unless the colour code of the wires going to the three pin socket correspond to those in the upper diagram below. (yellow, yellow/gray and yellow/blue)
If I am right a battery charging accessory could also be plugged into this socket or a 6 diode (4 wire) rectifier wired up as in the bottom diagram.

probably total cobblers though!

nope had one myself. It is a plug in for a tach. You can buy the wiring harness for the tach to just plug in and hook up the other end to the tach.

Yep, a tachometer. You can also use it for anything else that you want powered only when the key is turned on.
