OMC Controller Question. Does anyone has this controller?

I have a pretty complex question.
I have the Quicksilver controller (see attached image).
It is installed for the outboard motor. Some features are disabled (kill switch, tilt trim etc.)
As u can see it has the protection against the starting in gear.
Here is the problem. For me to start the motor I need to add a bit throttle. This controller on the face side has the button in the middle of the shaft taht says "Throttle Only". But when I press this button nothing happens.
On the picture I have marked the position of the gear (marked with 1) and throttle link (marked with 2).
I have disassembled the controller and when pressing the button I do not see any change when I adjust the throttle forward.
My understanding is that when I press the "throttle only" button it should not move the link 1 (gear) and move only link 2 (throttle) when I move the lever forward.

Without fixing this stupid controller I cannot start the motor :(, which means no boating :( :( :(

Re: OMC Controller Question

This may sound stupid, but are you pushing and holding the button when you shift the lever forward for throttle only. Also I had one that I really had to push the button hard before it would disingage the shift lever.

I may never want to see the inside of a throttle again

Might check the re-builder forum there are real doctors there

Re: OMC Controller Question

Is this a new boat to you, or have you run it for awhile. Not sure how yours works but most of the boats I have had you have to push button in and pull handle out to run throttle only. But mine have been on older control boxes....

Re: OMC Controller Question

1) This boat is new to me and came with motor that "would not start". I have started it by disconnecting the linkage for throttle and manually increasing the gas supply when cranking it. That is why I am attacking this issue.
2) I push the button, it goes a bit in, then move the lever forward, button meanwhile stays in. When I move the throttle back to neutral, button pops back
3) I have not tried to pull the throttle while pushing the button (On attached image 2) but while I was playing with it, It did not look like it can be pulled out. Should I be pulling the lever in the point 2 (on the attached image)????

Re: OMC Controller Question

Give it a try push in hold an pull handle out pull at the bottom by the button. If works that way you will feel it pop out.

Re: OMC Controller Question

I have an OMC controller similar to yours. I dont have to push a button, but rather have to pull the base of the handle out towards me, then while holding it out push the throttle forward. that engages neutral throttle only. like the other poster said, try pushing the button and pulling the base out. it might not be that easy, mines a little tough sometimes.

Great! Just to confirm, you pull it out towards center of boat or slide it? So if I am facing it, I will try to push the button and then pull the base towards myself, right?

Yes, as you face it pull it out towards you and while you hold it out slide it forward towards the bow. Not sure if it will work, but thats how mine is. I have to use two hands to do mine, I think they design it that way on purpose.

No it is not omc but they all work about the same. The diagram you posted is what I have on mine no button but still pull stright out to disengage for throttle only. The old merc I had did have a button push in and pull out....

I had a boat with that exact controller. I had to push really hard to get it to work (on the button). I did not have to pull the handle out.

My guess is that it is push the button in only. From the back of the controller can you see that pushing the button does anything?

By the way, you hold the button in while you move the lever forward. If you take pressure off the button while you move the lever, all bets are off. Once you get it past the point where throttle starts increasing, you can release the pressure.

Ozenine,
That IS a Merc shifter. You simply need to push and hold the "throttle only" button and move the lever a little forward, the shift butterfly will be disengaged. The effort to move the lever will be noticably easier than if you were shifting into gear. But one thing you want to make sure of is that you actually ARE in neutral when the lever is in the neutral position. Cables can stretch over time, and when you return the lever to neutral, you may be contacting the limit switch which tells the motor it's in gear, hence it won't start. Check you shift linkage on the motor...

Re: OMC Controller Question. Does anyone has this controller?

Cannot see that something happens when I push the button. The butterfly does not disengage. So regardless of whether I press the button or not the top linkage (gear) on the picture moves.
My assumption is taht when it is in ThrottleOnly mode the gear linkage should not move at all.

I thought that it was OMC cuase the new T&T switch on dash was OMC. Sorry about that.

Than that says there is something amiss in the throttle only button. The shift linkage should not move AT ALL.

Re: OMC Controller Question. Does anyone has this controller?

Well, mystery is solved. It was indeed just 1 button taht needed to be pushed ..... really hard.
I have got the piece of 2x4 and pushed with BOTH hands. only then it pushed in all the way. Funny thing is that there is a middle position when the button is pushed in and stays in but nothing happens. It confused me.
Anyways thanks a lot for your, guys help! Really saved me a lot of time and effore dissassembling this controller
