omc distributor

i recently found out my boat has a car distributor in it and im looking at some on the web. most say omc stringer v8 chevy. will this work in my chevy motor? mine is not a stringer at least i dont think. thanks, mark

well it was sold to me as a 92 sunbird. it has a 350 in it that runs exellent but have not had it in the lake yet. it has an omc cobra outdrive thats about all i can tell you about the boat, except it was a 4.3 originally. the distributor looks like the same as in my chevy truck. i posted another question about the ESA switch because mine is not hooked up, and was told it was a car distributor and cant be run legally. found some on the web for sale but most say omc stringer 350 v8

just pricey. i didnt give much more than that for the boat. also this fella told me today that i would never get this boat to run as it should without putting a distributor with points and a coil back on it, is that true? im on a tight budget right now but i would like to take this to the lake to see how it runs in the water, but i dont want to get in trouble with DNR cause i dont have a cover over this motor right now

You need a marine distributor. All the advance in the marine distributor is done with centrifugal(points) or electronically(Delco EST type).

Boating is an expensive hobby.

oh, i know thats right. ive had boats since i was in my 20s. i sold a boat simular to this one and bought a 30 ft pontoon. but i bought this one just because it was a v8, and i was well aware that it was going to need a good bit of work. i will git-r-done eventually. we still playing at the lake on the 30 ft

nobody ever said if the stringer distributor will work or not. found a couple affordable ones, but they say omc stringer

You need a marine distributor for a Chevy 350(assuming that is what you have). Doesn't matter if its OMC, Mercruiser, Volvo....

Just be aware that a used points distributor could have worn bushings and centrifugal advance mechanisms that may not work well due to corrosion.

If you buy a used electronic distributor, make sure its compatible with an OMC ESA system or can be adapted to it.

Here is an example of a used one that would require a ton of rework. By the time you but new points, cap and spark plug wires, the Delco EST doesn't look so bad.

Remember that the EST comes with the cap and spark plug wires. Makes the price seem way more manageable.

does anyone know about a mallory marine distributor the part number is YL624JV. what about that one bruce says guaranteed to be good or money back

Contact Mallory and see if the ESA can work with it. You may have to go with the Mercruiser method that just shorts out the coil. Just keep in mind that you will need a coil with that distributor. EST kit comes with one.

alright thanks again bruce. maybe i can sweet talk my wife into let me get the new one. i dought it lol i just bought a 32 ft camper and didnt tell her about it before i did a month ago
