My local outboard mechanic states that the OMC gear boxes of the late 50s, 60s were inherently flawed, that slipping out of gear is a common and recurring problem, due to premature wear of some part. Is this an accurate assertion?

Do the Electramatic shift models, specifically the version on the 40 hp motors, have a better record of durability?

Once again, thanks for the help.

Hummm.... if they were "inherently flawed" wouldn't they all be gone 40-50 years later?

The only downside besides performance & fuel consumption (compared to todays 40 hp) I see is parts availability.

The electramatic has a worse track record than the mechanical shift units, cheifly due to the expense and difficulty repairing them, but also because an electrical failure would leave you stranded.
Frankly, it seems to me that the mechanical lower units were pretty tough compared to some of the smaller HP ones. Mabey that's what your mechanic is thinking of??
