Physically, yes... different gear ratios for v6 & v8.Originally posted by hystat:
there's only one size 800
You've never said which motor you have. The OD's should have a 3" blue decal on the top of the outdrive. One would read a big "800" with a little "1.50:1" for the ratio, the other should read "400". Not sure what the gear ratio was for the little guy.

You also need to make sure that you do not have the long profile electric shift outdrive because the shorter 400 or 800 won't work for you if you do.Originally posted by Shaneth2:
The guy that has the outdrive doesn't know whether its a V6 or V8 and I can't tell from the photo he sent me. What should I have him measure?
You probably have the pure mechanical shift unit. OMC started those in the early '80's along with the use of the V6's. I don't think the hydro-mechanical 800's had the same variety. They were produced from ? '79 to 81, I think.

Even tho you can use either variety in an ES conversion it would be prudent for Shaneth to come clean on exactly what he has. He's been a bit short on details. He hasn't said what motor he has, what steering system he has or what the profile of his current ES OD is. Come on Shaneth, get mit der program!Originally posted by hystat:
My 800 V6 drive is a 1.77 ratio, there are also 1.71 V6 ratio drives. The 400 drive i had was a 1.64. There's also a 1.81 ratio 400.
It's all over the board on those later stringers...
You can convert from ES quicker than you can rebuild a merc.Originally posted by P.V.:
Let's see... I was waiting for some assistance. Converter box (with ALL the hardware, studs to mount it on the intermediate hsg/bell hsg), control box (with the correct length cables), the "correct" OD, Prop, etc..... JUST to name a "few" of the items needed. If you can call spoending time/money for all this and not call that a hassle.... then I think he can rebuild transmissions and perform brain surgery from parts bought on eBay... lol!!
It your current one is an electric shift it cannot be an 800 series. To determine if the shorter 800 drive will work you would need to measure from the center of the pivot trunions to the cavitation plate. Compare yours with the 'new unit' then see where that measurement would put the cavitation plate in relation to the bottom of your hull.

This still does not address which exact variation of the 800 or 400 that you're hoping to get. Have the guy see what decal is on the top of the OD when he is getting you the dimensions mentioned above.

This kinda reminds me of my 17 y/o son. When he comes to ask if he can do X, I have to remind him that I need ALL of the details, regarding his plan, before I can answer him.Originally posted by Shaneth2:
Okay, Okay, I confess. I had a 5 liter ford 302 which I replaced with a Ford 351, both of which are V8. The electric shift OD I have is the 800 High Profile and I have the cable steering.
