OMC electric stringer drive oil contamination

New owner issue: If the access plug to the grease/lube fitting to the waterpump shaft is removed while in the water, is the oil now contaminated? (Instructions from previous owner said operate without the plug.) Thanks again, guys!

If your seals are good it should not be contaminated. I am not sure why the instructions were to run it with it off though, I can't see a reason to do this.

Thanks, Mahoney.......previous owner said it was a water inlet!

Nope, on those old Electric Shift OMC's(I have one) the water inlet is above and infront of the prop facing down with a little screen on it. The water pickup tube doesn't feed off water at all that makes its way into that cavity behind that plug.
