OMC Engine Idle Help!!

I just purchased a 1989 inboard/outboard (sterndrive) boat. It won't idle. I have limited knowledge about boats but minor knowledge on car engines. So, i thought i would have a look. It appears that the idle screw is slipping on the plate. If i set the screw off to where it idles properlly it works fine until i put it into gear. Then the screw doesn't hold and the carb closes up and the engine dies. If i screw the idle screw in the whole way so it is tight and won't slip, it idles fine but it idles at a very high rpm. Any ideas why this might not be holding the idle properlly? or why it is slipping?

Please help,

thanks!!!

Re: OMC Engine Idle Help!!

I'm not sure what kind of carb it is, i will look tonight and see if i can find that out.

A bigger screw? then it wouldn't fit in the hole...

I'm wondering what holds the curved plate in place that screw tightens on to. It seems like it just falls as soon as the screw slips off. Or is that by design?

Sounds like your setting the fast idle choke pull off screw in which the carburetor is off an automobile engine not marine, there should be another screw on the opposite side for the curb idle. This is all just speculation until we have some pictures.

Re: OMC Engine Idle Help!!

I finally had a few minutes to look at it again. You are correct, it was the fast idle choke. I adjusted the mixture screws on the other side of the carb and voila it is now running great. Idles around 1100 which i have come to accept as the engine shakes quite a bit at lower rpms. Seems to run well and doesn't die when idling anymore.

Thanks for your help guys! Much appreciated. And i do apologize for my lack of knowledge when asking questions.

1100 for idle is too high. Not even sure what engine we're talking about here but if you continue to put your rig in gear at 1100 rpm's you'll be finding out how much it takes to fix an OMC drive.

I agree, however it doesn't "clunk" when putting it into gear. it goes in smooth. Maybe the gauge is off. Is that possible?
