Where can I buy parts for a 1983 OMC/Evinrude/Johnson Saildrive engine? This is a 2-stroke 35 hp inboard with a 90 degree lower unit to the prop shaft. Are these motors still built?

thanks

patrick

I'LL admit you have kinda an oddy here. What parts are you looking for? Powerhead, ignition, carb parts I would imagine are easy to come by with the help of a good OMC PARTS man.Keep this thread going. There may well be someone here that has seen one of these things.I sure havn't

Bad News....I just took a cousre at the Woodenboat School in Maine for fiberglass boat marine surveying. The cousre was mostly how to run the business and other things like the use of moisture meters. Anyway Maine is over run with sailboats. 5/8's of the course time was spent in local boatyards looking at boats, most were sailboats. I got talking to several boatyard owners about these OMC saildrives. They all said about the same thing. Run them till they quit and junk them. Parts are about impossible to find and even when they are running their nothing but trouble. The problem is they are not made anymore and most sailboat type people are not engine tinker's so when they quit they usually just get tossed. No one saves the old ones for parts.

A fair variety of maintenance type parts are still available. But, like Dunk said if you have a major problem you might as well junk it. The average parts guy will laugh if you try to buy even a prop, many (parts guys) don't know props are still available - and a GOOD parts guy is hard to find... The last Saildrive was built in 1984, many of the major components particular to the saildrive unit are pretty tuff to come by. The powerhead is basically a de-tuned 32 cubic inch unit, which is rated at 15 hp.

-John

Hi Meeker 22

You are right about parts interchangeability to the 20-35HP Outboard. The powerhead on these are basicly same - the carbureator on saildrive is from 20HP. I fact a have a carb, but i live in Denmark. I think most of the gear parts from a 25Hp before 79 goes in the saildrive, but i am not completely sure. As the compression on the cylinders are so equal, i dont think you have a major mechanic problem. Normal compression on these should be around 110-115.The to decarb several times and see if it improves. The saildrives were never very sucesfull. This motor builds up a lot of carbon going slow, which is exactly when most saliboatcaptains do ! I wouldnt advise you to give up yet.

The only non "outboard" part is the exhaust manifold. It's different than the 35 and hasn't been available for quite some time although I haven't checked in a couple of years. With all thats been going on they may have "found" some.

Good luck!
