I have a 1987 Omc ford 2.3l I have been working on the past few months. It was previously parked in a friends yard for a couple years but ran fine before,Besides the cosmetics I have replaced : starter, alternator, wiring, ,ignition.plugs, coil, and bought a used distributor. So the boat was running great. Id run it on muffs for an hour or so every now and then about a dozen times (while I started replacing deck and seats) So I start it at the house with muffs a couple weeks ago and It runs poorly, wont idle without dying out. So i check the oil level and it is high. I pulled the filter and the oil is really thin and smells like gas. Oil level is probably about a quart or so full of gasoline. other symptoms were the spark plugs looked black and for what i would assume would be an unrelated issue the new alternator doesn't seem to be keeping battery charged, so if anyone has a wiring diagram or something on that. But anyway, I read the threads and have replaced the the fuel pump with no luck so I just ordered a carb kit , will be my first rebuild so tips please. I also ordered new gaskets for intake/exhaust manifold because they appear to be in bad shape. If anyone has any experience/knowledge/advice/or ideas id appreciate any input .

After reading though your post I take it your issue is that you have the issue with it won't idle and your going to rebuild the carb. If this is correct, carbs are easy enough to rebuild the two largest issue in my opinion are, getting the carb channels clean and adjustments. Cleaning is the hardest mainly because trying to get the tiny channels cleaned which cannot be seen. If you can get them cleaned out the adjustments are easy enough if they are done as instructed in the kit

I know thats a lot of information in one paragraph.I am trying to give all info on what I have done and what I will be doing, I am rebuilding the carb and changing other parts because of my root problem that there is gas in the oil. The fuel pump change doesnt seem do the trick and I am wondering what else can I check as I m tinkering with these other things.

Do a compression test, you should see 170- 190 lbs, if its low pour a have oz of oil in each cyl and bump the starter a couple times, reinstall the plugs and let it sit for some time. then retest, if compression does not come back up you could busted rings.
