Hi guys, I have a 1991 Four winns OMC cobra 3.0. I got it out for it first run this year and it ran great, pulled tubes very nice and also idled perfect. Not hard starts or anything. Well I pulled it out of the water and parked it for the week and that next weekend is when I started having trouble. Got it to the launch and it wouldn't start right away. I had to push the button to disengage the prop and give it some throttle. It did end up starting, but also started this intermittent screeching sound... I will include a link to a video that is making the sound. (Not of my boat, but of someone else) I get it away from the launch and everything seems fine. The noise goes away and we cruise off. We stop for awhile and then go back out. No problems besides from that noise for a second or two. Well we get out half way on the lake and I got to put it in nuetrul and now it won't start at all. Had to get it towed back.

the only thing I did between the first weekend and the second was put gas in it.

**** link to video**** https://youtu.be/KHLyslDK8Lo

any help would be great! Thanks.

Will the engine turn? And when it turns, do you still hear the screeching noise? The noise is coming from the engine, not the drive correct?

Welcome aboard.

Perfectly normal starting procedure

remove the belt for a quick test start , if no noise, spin cic pump, alt pully, PS pully. Other than that would be a slipping belt and the alt pully is making the noise. It goes away when the battery comes up to full charge.

The engine turns and will even run for a split second. When I did get it run the second time is when it started making the noise. Screeching noise only made itself known when the engine would run more then a second. I guess my first problem is I can't get it to run. It will crank and turnover, but ignite. I checked the gas all the way to the carb and I have gas going to it. I believe it might be something with my jets not spraying? They aren't clogged as I can active the pump with my hand on the side of the carb and they will spray. I kept it running for a good 5 mins by starting it and then running back and pressing the carb pump, the noise of the screeching would only make sound when I would press the carb pump to put more gas in the bowl...... if that all makes sense.

thanks for the quick responses guys!

I'd disconnect the drive belts and see if any of the accessories (water pump, alternator, P/s pump if equipped are turning rough, as if the bearing is going bad. If so replace what is making the noise. It could also be a starter solenoid that is sticking slightly and keeping the starter pinion gear engaged against the flywheel. If its not one of the accessories, pull out the starter and check it.

well figured out the noise itself. I was the starter not disengaging along with a slipping belt. Still having problems with the carb. Its a brand new holly carb. Going to pull the specs on the carb and see if I can get it tuned. Thanks for the help guys.
