OMC FUEL PUMP PROBLEM

I have a 95 ChrisCraft with a 4.3 VolvoPenta/ OMC engine with an electric fuel pump. I am having an occasional problem that i need advice about. The boat will always start right of the trailer, but after a few minutes of running the engine will die. The carb. will be dry and no fuel being pumped through the line. I can start the engine up with carbcleaner and after about a half a can later the engine will run on it's own, I will not have any more problems starting the engine the rest of the day and the engine doesnt skip a bit.It seems to me that the fuel pump is loosing its prime after the boat sits up for awhile. I dont have this problem if I use the boat every day. I was told that there is a check valve in the fuel pump that can leak down and cause this problem. I dont think it is electrical because the boat will run fine all day after getting it started. Has anyone had this type of problem before? How can I be sure it is the fuel pump? Thanks for any Help!

Re: OMC FUEL PUMP PROBLEM

Hi - just some thoughts..

To rule out a suction problem on the draw side of the pump...

You can disconnect the fuel line between the fuel pump and the fuel filter and stick the fuel pickup line in a clean gallon of gas, and see if the problem goes bye bye..

If it goes away you know the pump is fine and the problem lies before the pump, such as a bad fuel filter gasket, bad gasoline hose or the vent is clogged in the fuel tank causing a vacumn inside the tank shortly after firing it up.

Now if the problem is still there.. while sucking fuel from the gallon gas tank you can throw a fuel pressure guage between the pump and the engine to see if the pumps pressure is operating to specs.

If the pump's fuel pressure is way lower than specs you know you should change out the pump.

If it is running at specs no problem, I'd head for the carb.

Knowing what your engine requires for fuel pressure is important before you start ruling out the pump so check with your local dealer for the fuel pressure information.

Hope this helps a bit..

Pat B. customerservice@401hosting.com

Re: OMC FUEL PUMP PROBLEM

Thanks cap. I'll give it a try. Do you know of a good source if I need a new pump?
